Trainings

Along with our daily zazen schedule, we offer these classes, practice days and ceremonies on a regular basis. Please check our calendar for the current schedule.

Zen Meditation Instruction for Newcomers

Classes in meditation (Zazen) for those who are new to Zen practice. Also helpful for those new to ZCLA who have meditation experience with other groups. Check our curriculum for a description of these classes.

Day of Reflection
Every third Saturday is devoted to the Zen bodhisattva precepts. The day begins with a recitation of the precepts and includes zazen and face-to-face meetings with our teachers, a brief precept talk, and a precept circle. Open to everyone. For precise schedule click here.

Bearing Witness Councils

Most months on the last Thursday evening, we will hold a Bearing Witness Council focused on a shadow issue. This is an issue in which we are unaware of its aspects (i.e., in shadow) or something that we have difficulty facing or including. The councils will be from 7:30 to 9:00 in the Dharma Hall in lieu of the usual Dharma Talk. There will be a seat for the shadow, which will be represented by a symbol that evokes the shadow. This is a practice of not turning away.  Council is also a Core Practice at ZCLA.  For a copy of the Council Handbook, click here.  For a copy of the Council Facilitator's quick sheet, click here.

Founders Service

Once a month we hold a special service to honor our founders, Baian Hakujun Daiosho and Taizan Maezumi Honored One, and the main ancestors of our Lineage. Service is held in the Founders Room on the Saturday closest to the 14th of the month.

Ceremony of Atonement
Every six weeks we hold a ceremony for the renewal of our vows and precepts. The ceremony includes a period of zazen, chanting, bowing, and an opportunity to bear witness to our conduct in the presence of the Sangha. Those who have received the precepts are asked to attend this ceremony regularly. Open to everyone.

Public Face-to-Face

Roshi or a Senior Teacher will pose a question or theme to the Sangha and we will take turns engaging with them in this Public Face-to-Face with a teacher. A wonderful opportunity to ask a question and learn from others. Everyone welcome.

Dharma Chat
Once a month on Sunday morning, we have an hour-long Dharma Chat on a topic of daily practice. We discuss how we practice in everyday life situations and issues.

Intensive Practice Periods

Every fall, the Zen Center has a 90 day intensive Practice Period in which Sangha Members and our affiliated Sangha Members make a commitment to deepen their practice.

SALA (Social Action Loving Action)

The Zen Center is increasing its involvment in Social Action Loving Action activities throughout the year.

Memorial Services

The Zen Center also periodically offers Memorial Services.
